Grantham Museum is hosting a special weekend dedicated to Aveling Barford, one of Grantham's most significant engineering companies. The Aveling Barford Industrial Weekend takes place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, from 10am to 4pm, at Grantham Museum and on St Peter's Hill.
The event will feature outdoor machinery displays and indoor exhibitions within the museum, showcasing Aveling Barford-related objects, photographs and stories from the museum's collection. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the machinery up close and learn how it was designed and built.
Museum Seeks Local Memories
Grantham Museum is asking former Aveling Barford employees, their families and anyone with memories of the company to contribute to the weekend. Local people are encouraged to bring photographs, letters, documents, memorabilia and personal stories connected to Aveling Barford.
The museum is particularly interested in memories of working at the factory, photographs of family members employed there, recollections of the machinery and the people who built it, or the role Aveling Barford played in everyday life in Grantham.
Supporting the Event
Ben Hobster is bringing Aveling Barford machinery to the weekend display. Viv Reichelt, Chair of Grantham Museum, said: "Aveling Barford is such an important part of Grantham's industrial heritage, and we're delighted to be able to bring some of that history to life for visitors through this special weekend. For many local families, the company was much more than a factory — it was part of the fabric of the town, providing employment, skills and memories for generations."
The event is expected to appeal to lifelong Grantham residents, former employees, families, engineering enthusiasts and local history enthusiasts. The weekend forms part of 'A New Century', a project supported by National Lottery players and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
