Grantham Mencap held its second annual Downtown Spud in a Pot weigh-in event on 28 July 2026. All 13 entries came from people who use the centre, with participants and organisers gathering to reveal and weigh each potato.
The afternoon was marked by smiles, pride and excitement as the entries were presented. Lizzie won the competition and celebrated her achievement with what organisers described as pure joy that lifted the whole room.
Community spirit and thanks
The event was organised purely for fun, with that spirit running throughout the afternoon. In a gesture of appreciation, the organisers surprised the judges with a thank-you card.
Councillor Ian Selby described the event as a simple idea that brought a lot of happiness, noting a day full of laughter, encouragement and community spirit. Trevor Rickards served as fellow judge.
