Eleven-year-old Harry Goodwin donated £300 to Grantham Food Bank after a charity ball raised funds for causes close to his heart. Harry and his mother Hayley shopped at Asda Grantham on Union Street, selecting food and everyday essentials with help from Asda community champion Sally Slater.
Harry noticed the trolley collecting for Grantham Food Bank every time he visited Asda Grantham with his mum. He decided he wanted to help.
Harry has cerebral palsy and underwent spinal surgery at Leeds Children's Hospital a few years ago. To give something back, his mother Hayley and her friend Debby Summers organised The Evergreen Ball at Belton Park Golf Club earlier in 2026. The event raised £1,100. The majority, £800, went to Leeds Children's Hospital. Harry insisted the remaining £300 be used to buy food and essentials for Grantham Food Bank.
Sally Slater guided Harry, Hayley and Debby around the aisles at Asda Grantham, helping them select items the food bank needed most and treats Harry thought other children would enjoy. Harry led the entire shopping trip, including using the Scan & Go machine himself.
“We are all so proud of Harry, he's such a kind kid,” said Hayley. “He's an empath, and likes to give back. He absolutely loved it and had a big grin on his face all the way round. When we got to the food bank they were overwhelmed and so thankful, and Harry got lots of cuddles too.”
Sally Slater said: “What a wonderful example of kindness, generosity and compassion. The world needs more people like Harry. He should be so proud of himself. He's an inspiration to us all.”
A permanent food bank collection point is available at Asda Grantham on Union Street, where customers can add items to their shop for local families who need support.
